XP chart by ECL
For characters with ECL of one or more, until they have achieved enough experience for a character of the sum of <class level> + <Effective Character Level (ECL)>, they can still gain levels but at a reduced rate. The table below shows the level progression for ECL 0, 1, 2, and 3 characters. ECL 0 are the base races such as human, elf, etc.
Red values are for levels where the character has not yet "paid" for his or her ECL.
This system favors ECL characters since it allows a little advancement prior to them hitting a character level of their ECL + 1 but at a greatly reduced rate.
Sonja is a human ranger; Alexi is a
planetouched elf (ECL + 1); and Thunderbeard is a half dragon dwarf (ECL +3).
All characters begin at first level.
- After 1000 XP, Sonja is 2nd level and the others are still 1st level.
- After 2000 XP, Sonja is still 2nd level, Alexi is now 2nd level and Thunderbeard is stlil first level.
- After 6000 XP, Sonja is now 4th level, Alex is 3rd level and Thunderbeard has been 2nd level for a 2000 XP. From now on Alex, would look like an ECL + 1 character and is one level behind Alexi for the same XP.
- At 28000 XP, Sonja is now 8th level, Alexi is 7th level and Thunderbeard is 5th. From now on Thunderbeard progresses like an ECL + 3 character (three levels begind ECL 0 characters like Sonja).

Another way to look at the same data is the chart below which shows character level for characters of ECL 0 to 3 for XP from 0 to 15000.
